Years ago I read William Glasser's book
Reality Therapy. His basic idea is that we all have legitimate needs, but we often get them met with irresponsible behavior. We can get our needs met in better ways. When I see people involved in self-destructive lifestyles I want to tell them that, while their needs are valid, how they're getting them met isn't. Life works so much better when we're doing healthy things. God gave us His law, not to make our lives miserable, but so that we can have a better, more abundant life. It may not seem like that, especially when all we see of Christianity is a list of "thou-shalt-nots". But God really has our best interests in mind. We can enjoy life to the fullest when we choose His will, and say "yes" to Him.
